MAKING HINDI FUN - 5 : final interactive project



Questions posed:

1) reasoning for thinking that they would be successful?
2) What is unique about each one?
3) What is the payoff for interacting with the project once? Multiple times? Does the payoff
diminish with continued use?
4) Are you interested in creating a group activity or an individual activity?
5) How can you make Bingo a more novel experience instead of a re-skinning of the game?


RESPONSE:
rule changes for hindi BINGO: bingo + word making
multi-player game , 3 or more players
age - 4+
main purpose : to make words and make them FAST, the bigger the word, more points.

scratching the word - is only a way of getting the letter by LUCK


1) the adult picks a card from the stack, facing the picture part of card to the children -
2) he calls out the alphabet "a for apple"
3) the child makes a connection with the sound, and the picture to the alphabet form in his memory
4) he scratches the alphabet from the supplied scratch card
5) while scratching he has an added challenge - he has to make as many 2, 3, 4 letter words he can from the letters scratched only

winner of the game : the child with the highest points at the end when all 37 letters have been called wins the game:
bonus points:
first 10 word - 50 points
second 10 words - 25 points
third 10 word - 5 points

for individual words :
2 letter words - 2 points
3 letter words - 3 points
4 letter words - 4 points

there are total of 50 letters in hindi - 37 consonents and 13 vowels.
the cards will only contain consonents. the player has the freedom to use any of the vowels.


Hindi Bingo:
1) it is challenging - there is luck and speed involved in the game. the player needs to develop a strong vocabulary every time he plays to allow for more word sot be formed quickly
2) if played with older players the younger ones will automatically learn more words
3) it will be successful because the child is already familiar with bingo - so when we are building a new format on it won't completely new.


problems:
1) it would be hard for the player to make words while listening to the alphabets called -
2) but the competetion can continue even after the alphabets have been called - then it depends on whether the player can use the alphabets well or no
3) also therefore more points are given to a player who makes the first 10 etc


VARIATION:


2 part game - luck + word making
1st part - determine letters
2nd part - timed word making
time 3 minutes:
winner: whoso ever makes the maximum words

1) dealer calls out only 25 letters out of 37
2) player is provided with only 15 possible letters
3) therefore at the of the game i only have a % of 15 letters . assuming - 7-8

I can use 8 letters plus vowels to make as many words as i can in a given time limit.

when the time is up -
2 letter word - 2 points
3 letter word - 5 points
4 letter word - 7 points

Alphabet clothesline:
1) will be successful because stuff/ plush toys of hindi alphabet forms do not exist
2) it is unique as hindi is uniquely written under the line it makes sense to have the letter forms be suspended /hanging
3) The sound element allows a child to be exposed to the phonetic of the alphabet from early childhood
4) child will start to develop some favorite sounds or forms and will want to walk towards them and squeeze them. as he does with toys that incorporate sound -
5) this particular activity can be individual or group - if installed in his playroom, he alone will play with it. If installed in a playschool - many kids can play with them.

Alphabet form puzzle:
1) this activity may not be extremely succesful as it has limited reward - and not enough "fun"
2) it is unique because it is very specifc to the shapes and froms found in hindi alphabets
3) while it is an interesting observation and excersise typography - it may not be very enjoyable for the child as once he knows how ot make it there is not enough challenge the next time around. - the pay off does diminish with continued use.
4) maybe a too focused attention to the forms alone and he is not being exposed to them, or interacting with them in a playful way.
